Dietary Principles for Partial Gastrectomy 胃部份切除飲食原則

2026/3/26

Patients who have undergone gastrectomy have degraded functions of food stirring, grinding, emptying, digestion, storage and secretion of digestive juice. The discomfort symptoms can be improved through a progressive diet.

Applicable to

  • Patients who have received partial gastrectomy
  • Patients who have received gastric vagotomy
  • Patients who have received pyloroplasty
  • Patients who have received gastroduodenal anastomosis
  • Patients who have received gastrojejunostomy
Follow the doctor's instructions on diet after operation
Day 1
Clear liquid diet, 6-8 times per day
(rice soup, filtered juice 30 c.c. once)
Days 2 and 3
Full liquid diet, 6-8 times per day
(Cut the cooked vegetables, meat, porridge and noodles into pieces, then add adequate warm water and the shreds to the blender and blend into liquids)
Days 4 and 5
Semi liquid diet, 6-8 times per day (e.g. porridge, noodles)
Days 6 and 7
Soft diet (choose foods that are soft and easy to digest; avoid deep fry and grill)
Day 8
Full diet

Precautions

  • Food intake is determined by gastric residual volume.
  • Eat smaller meals 5-6 times a day.
  • Avoid refined sugars: sweetened beverages, sweets, cakes.
  • Do not drink a lot with meals, wait 30 to 60 minutes after a meal before drinking.
  • Choose a balanced diet with adequate protein, such as fish, meat, legumes, eggs, etc.
  • Mainly choose non-irritating, soft food. Avoid irritating foods such as coffee.
  • Avoid gas-producing food, such as beans and milk, if you are prone to abdominal distension.
  • Take a semi-Fowler's position while eating, chew food really well, and lie down for 30 minutes after meals.
  • Add new foods one kind at once with small amounts to avoid side effects of dumping syndrome. If there is no discomfort, keep going.
  • If necessary, follow the doctor's instructions to supplement vitamins and minerals.

Diet for patients with dumping syndrome

  • After palliative gastrectomy, most patient experience symptoms such as cold sweat, systemic weakness, dizziness, palpitations, abdominal pain, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms 10 to 15 minutes after eating (early dumping syndrome), others have symptoms one to four hours after eating (late dumping syndrome) due to the rapid passage of food through the gastrointestinal tract.
  • For patients with dumping syndrome, please refer to the "Dietary Guidelines for Patients with Dumping Syndrome".
